Green is more than a typical turf color for us; when our DuraFlo coating is used, IRONTURF’s woven construction and polyolefin composition are designed to allow the turf materials to be directed into polyolefin recycling streams at end of life, where appropriate infrastructure exists.

For many years, TenCate has been devoted to creating functional and stunning turf with partial recyclability. We have developed IRONTURF with a polyolefin-based backing system designed to support material recovery at end of life, as part of our ongoing work on recyclability in synthetic turf.
With IRONTURF, our approach to product development considers both field performance and end-of-life material recovery. Hot melt technology has long been used in geotechnical engineering and the specialty carpet industry. We brought it to synthetic turf products with the DuraFlo backing system as a polyolefin-based alternative to polyurethane coatings, with the goal of simplifying material recovery at end of life.
End-Of-Life Material Recovery
Most synthetic tufted turf is created with a polyester backing and a polyurethane coating to create a suitable bond. While some tufted fields can be repurposed into other products (like plastic lumber), they cannot be used to produce new synthetic turf since the resin isn’t homogenous. Because the woven construction does not use polyurethane, the recovered resin can be homogeneous — a property that may support its potential reuse in new turf products as recycling infrastructure develops.

Dimensional Stability and Traditional Strength of Woven Turf
The polyolefins that make up our backing absorb almost no moisture, relieving the stress on seams. Plus, our process is relatively tension free, making the backing less likely to move. Tuft bind is unaffected by coating woven turf and grab tear is much higher than traditional tufted goods.
